Knee osteoarthritis is a leading cause of pain and disability, and although intra-articular glucocorticoid injections are commonly used, concerns remain about their potential to promote cartilage loss. To address this gap, a study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of glucocorticoid injections into the infrapatellar fat pad in individuals with inflammatory knee osteoarthritis , involving 60 participants with a mean age of 65 years.
The study found that the treatment group did not have a statistically significant reduction in visual analog scale (VAS) pain compared with placebo (β39.3 mm vs β31.4 mm; between-group difference β7.9 mm), nor a significant difference in effusion volume reduction (β4.9 mL vs β5.4 mL; between-group difference 0.5 mL).
