Worldwide, approximately 5.6 million children die before their fifth birthday each year, with 80% of these deaths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. More than half (54%) of these deaths occur in children with malnutrition. Strong epidemiological evidence suggests the cause as an elevated susceptibility to life-threatening infections amongst malnourished children. With the current increase in lifestyle disorders globally, it is essential to promote healthy nutrition in all age groups.

In India, 1 out of every 5 children under 5 years of age is wasted and 43% of these children are underweight for their age .
