Patients with Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD)are found to be susceptible for thrombosis. The most common types of thrombosis in these patients are pulmonary and cerebral thrombosis. The study published recently suggests that patients with CCHD have much higher prevalence of cerebral and pulmonary thrombosis than previously reported. Cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) occurs due to structural deformities which cause deoxygenated blood bypassing the lungs and entering the systemic circulation or a mixture of deoxygenated and oxygenated blood entering the circulatory system.

The patients with the CCHD have relatively high prevalence of thrombosis despite their young age and absence of classical cardiovascular risk factors.
