Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum . This organism is naturally present in the soil near riverbeds, caves, and soil rich in bird droppings. 1 The fungus spreads through the air when the soil is disturbed and enters the human body through the nasal passage. It primarily affects the lungs, but the infection can spread to other organs in severe cases (known as disseminated histoplasmosis).
Immunocompromised individuals are particularly at risk of this disease, and India has reported a few cases of histoplasmosis in the past few years, along with mucormycosis cases.
