A single hookah smoking session causes an acute increase in arterial stiffness in young adult hookah smokers reported a new study published in American Journal of Cardiology. It evident that Hookah or waterpipe smoking is a healthier alternative to cigarettes and getting quick popularity worldwide. However, there is less evidence for the hookah smoking which can cause an acute increase in arterial stiffness.
A study of 48 young healthy habitual smokers showed that hookah smoking increased heart rate by +16±1 beats/min and mean brachial arterial pressure by +6±1 mmHg (both p<0.05, mean ± SE). Furthermore, it increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and aortic augmentation index by +0.66±0.09 m/s−1 and +8.76±3.99%, respectively (p<0.05, mean ± SE), which signifies the increased acute arterial stiffness.
