Iatrogenic injury to the urinary tract is a possible complication of surgical procedures performed in the retroperitoneal abdominal space or in or around the pelvis. This article provides an overview of injuries encountered during surgical procedures. Advances in surgical techniques and approaches such as robotic and laparoscopic surgery have expanded the potential for iatrogenic injury. Evidence suggests that delayed diagnosis of iatrogenic injury is a major factor negatively influencing a patient's outcome.
Of note, the management of iatrogenic injuries has similarly transformed in recent years to focus on conservative, non-invasive, or minimally invasive techniques.
