Synopsis: Multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria are a global health threat that can be treated using imipenem (IMI), a type of carbapenem. To overcome carbapenem resistance, the therapy can be combined with β-lactamase inhibitors such as relebactum (REL). IMI/REL therapy can be well-tolerated than colistin plus IMI in patients with IMI-nonsusceptible, serious, gram-negative bacterial infections. This Journal Watch discusses the study “RESTORE-IMI 1: A Multicenter, Randomized, Double-blind Trial Comparing Efficacy and Safety of Imipenem/Relebactum vs. Colistin Plus Imipenem in Patients With Imipenem-Nonsusceptible Bacterial Infections” from Clinical Infectious Diseases, 2020.
