Patient safety is the absence of preventable harm to a patient during the process of healthcare. However, to achieve a substantial reduction in healthcare errors significant organizational changes are warranted. This article outlines important strategies that must be implemented for better patient safety in a hospital setting. In October 2004, WHO launched a patient safety program which underlined the importance of patient safety as a global healthcare issue.
Since then patient safety has been increasingly recognized as an issue of global importance, but much work remains to be done.
