For the first time in India, the forearm of an individual was entirely reconstructed! A team of surgeons led by a renowned plastic surgeon at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, has successfully reconstructed an extensively damaged forearm of a 27-year-old man. The injury was about 5 cm from the elbow joint, extending up to the wrist, and involved the skin and all the deep appendages of the forearm. This was an unusual case where the palm was undamaged; hence, a prosthetic arm could not be attached.
Multiple surgeries were performed over a period of three years which helped preserve the palm and restore its function. This case highlights the significance of planned sequential surgeries using autografts in restoring form and function in the unusual setting of an extensively damaged forearm with an intact palm, where attaching a prosthesis is not feasible .
