The newest World Malaria Report shows that India continues to carry the heaviest malaria load in the WHO South-East Asia Region. In 2024, the country was responsible for nearly three-quarters (73.3%) of all estimated cases in the region and close to nine out of ten (89%) malaria deaths. This is happening even though regional efforts have led to some of the fastest improvements globally in reducing malaria transmission. Official reporting indicated about 479,000 cases in the region in 2024, which represents a 65.7% drop since 2015, along with 99 recorded deaths.

However, WHO modeling suggests that the true picture is much larger, with roughly 2.7 million cases and 3,900 deaths. India contributes the majority of these numbers.
