Several studies have suggested a potential link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. A nationwide cohort study with sibling control was conducted to examine the association of acetaminophen use during pregnancy with children’s risk of autism , attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD ), and intellectual disability. Of the 2.4 million children, 7.49% were exposed to acetaminophen during pregnancy.
When analyzing the data without sibling control, ever-use of acetaminophen during pregnancy was marginally associated with a small increase in the risk of autism, ADHD, and intellectual disability. However, sibling control analyses found no evidence linking acetaminophen use during pregnancy to the risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability .
