A retrospective cohort study published in BMC Ophthalmology evaluated early visual outcomes in 193 eyes undergoing surgery for idiopathic full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs). Patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling followed by gas tamponade, and visual outcomes were assessed 25โ€“35 days postoperatively. Overall, surgery resulted in meaningful visual improvement, with 66.8% of eyes achieving at least a two-line gain in visual acuity and 52.3% achieving a three-line gain or greater. Mean visual acuity improved significantly from 0.774 logMAR preoperatively to 0.455 logMAR after surgery.

Notably, the magnitude of visual improvement was comparable across small, medium, and large macular holes. However, anatomical outcomes differed significantly by hole size. Closure rates were highest in small (98.9%) and medium (96.7%) holes but decreased to 78.0%โ€ฆ
