A 74-year-old woman is admitted with pain in the left iliac fossa. There was no bowel disturbance. She has a history of gastro-esophageal reflux and is taking lansoprazole daily. On examination her left iliac fossa was tender. A diagnosis of diverticulitis was made, and she was treated with cefuroxime intravenously. She made a good recovery but on the fifth day of her admission, she has an episode of diarrhea. The next day she has 4 episodes of watery diarrhea and complains of crampy abdominal pain.
Physical Examination On examination her mucous membranes were dry, and she has a fever of 38.5°C. She has mild diffuse abdominal tenderness. There was no guarding or rebound tenderness. She has prominent bowel sounds.
