Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among men and women. In India, lung cancer constitutes 9.3% of all cancer deaths and 6.9% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer screening tests have demonstrated to reduce 20% lung cancer mortality but at the same time poses few risks. Thus, it is important to know when the screening tests are important for lung cancer.
Screening means testing for a disease when there is no symptoms or history of that disease. However, screening tests are different than the diagnostic tests in the sense that the later one is done for the confirmation. While the screening tests can be helpful to detect cancer early and to decide the best treatment to avoid further progression of the disease, they can cause unnecessary anxiety or overdiagnosis due to false results.
