The Maharashtra government has proposed to reserve 10% of MBBS seats and 20% of medical PG seats for in-service doctors who are willing to work in rural areas for 5 and 7 years, respectively. This proposal aims at reducing the patient-doctor ratio gap in rural areas. The proposition further highlights that those who fail to work in rural state-run hospitals after completion of their courses could face imprisonment of five years and even cancellation of their degrees.

The state cabinet will introduce a bill called   “Maharashtra Designation of Certain Seats in Government and Municipal Corporations Medical Colleges” in the legislature and make it a law.
