Anogenital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) of which over 100 genotypes have been identified. The mode of transmission is most often by sexual contact but HPV may be transmitted perinatally and genital lesions resulting from a transfer of infection from hand warts have been reported in children. The main objective of this guideline is to reduce the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the complications that can arise in people either presenting with signs and symptoms of an STI or undergoing investigation for possible infection.
