Tinea is a fungal infection affecting the skin, hair, and nails. It causes a ring-like circular rash on the skin and is thus popularly known as “ringworm.” Tinea can affect all age groups and lead to different types of clinical manifestations. Physical examination of the lesions, microscopy, and a fungal culture can be used to diagnose tinea infections. However, several medical conditions like eczema, alopecia areata, and onychomycosis mimic tinea infection. Therefore, physicians should be careful when diagnosing tinea infections.
