A retrospective cohort study, conducted using electronic health records from Clalit Health Services in Israel, has explored the effect of metformin continuation after metabolic bariatric surgery on the long-term relapse of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The study included 366 patients with obesity and T2D who had achieved A1c levels below 6.5% within six months post-surgery. Researchers compared 122 patients who continued metformin with 244 who discontinued the medication, assessing outcomes such as long-term diabetes relapse (A1c โ‰ฅ 6.5%), changes in BMI, and all-cause mortality over a 5-year follow-up.

The study found no significant association between continuing metformin and the risk of diabetes relapse or glycemic control. Patients in both groups maintained A1c levels below 6.5% in the short and long term, with no notable differences in weight loss or mortality rates between the two groups.โ€ฆ
