Mrs. S presented her 2-year-old son to the ER with a complaint of difficulty in walking. The child was attended by an assistant, who later discussed the findings with the ER physician. When asked about the patient’s medical history, Mrs. S reported that her son had no recent incidents of trauma; however, the day-care center in which her child was going had children affected with cold. Furthermore, the child was able to stand but refused to walk when asked to do so.
A physical examination revealed that the patient experienced discomfort in the internal rotation of the right hip while passive movement and was afebrile. Radiological examinations were unremarkable. Based on the patient’s clinical examination , the ER physician informed Mrs. S that the child was suffering from hip synovitis or some minor injury that she could not recollect.
