The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has directed the Medical Council (MMC) to suspend the license of a surgeon whose negligence led to a 32-year-old patient lose his leg following amputation. The case came to light when one of the patient was diagnosed with varicose veins disease, in which his veins in the legs had widened and bulged out. During September 2015, the patient was operated on for the disease at one of hospital of Pune. According to his wife, the surgeon damaged the femoral artery in the right leg that carries blood supply to lower limb during the surgery.
The artery damage led to excessive bleeding that lead to undergo amputation. The MSHRC also ordered the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the patient.
