Pre-surgery weight loss improves the safety of metabolic surgery (MS) in individuals with obesity. With the availability of several glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and other weight loss drugs, it is crucial to determine which modality is most effective in preparing patients for MS. To assess this, a study evaluated the effects of multi-modal anti- obesity medications (mmAOM; a combination a GLP-1 RA with or without one or more of topiramate, orlistat, phentermine, or metformin, or a combination of these drugs without a GLP-1-RA), GLP-1 monotherapy, or non-pharmacologic medically supervised weight loss intervention (NP-MSWL) on weight-loss in 113 patients with a BMI ≥70 kg/m².
The study found that patients in the mmAOM group achieved the greatest total body weight loss (13.07%), compared to 8.14% in the GLP-1 monotherapy group and 5.95% in the NP-MSWL group. The…
