According to WHO, 20 million individuals were diagnosed with cancer, and 10 million cancer patients died in 2021. Moreover, there are inequalities in providing and accessing cancer worldwide. While comprehensive cancer treatment is available in over 90% of high-income countries, only 15% of it is available in low-income countries. In addition, government health financing schemes cover cancer care in 78% of high-income countries and 37% of low- and middle-income countries.
World Cancer Day is being observed with the theme “Close the Care Gap” from 2022 to 2024 to reduce these gaps in cancer care. This year, the cancer awareness campaign focuses on engaging leaders to prioritize cancer, create innovative strategies to resolve inequity in cancer care and invest resources to achieve a cancer-free world.
