Researchers from the George Institute for Global Health, India, have called for health policy action for burns care in India. 1 Burns cause disability with over eight million disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) worldwide . However, the burden of burns is higher in low-income countries than in high-income countries. 2 Advanced prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation strategies can reduce the prevalence of burns and their related disability and mortality in high-income countries.

Incidence of burns is generally increased, especially in children,  during the Diwali season in India. Over 23,000 burn-related deaths , which is nearly 20% of the global mortality rate,  were estimated in India in 2019. 3 Indian women have a higher risk of burns due to hazardous cooking practices, domestic violence-related homicides, dowry-related conflict, and suicides.
