A study from the Journal of Hepatology has revealed a new high-risk subtype of pediatric liver cancer using molecular profiling techniques. The molecular profile of this particular subtype does not fall under either hepatoblastoma (HB) or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) classifications. Instead, it has recurrent molecular characteristics reported in both HB and HCC. Scientists have classified these tumors as hepatoblastomas with hepatocellular carcinoma features (HBCs).

HBCs are more resistant to standard chemotherapy and have poor outcomes if not treated with aggressive surgical approaches, including transplantation. The study highlights the importance of molecular testing in accurately classifying various tumors to optimize treatment recommendations at the initial point of diagnosis. ##Reference## Sumazin P, Peters TL, Sarabia SF, Kim HR, Urbicain M, Hollingsworth EF, et al.โ€ฆ
