The Medical Council of India (MCI) has proposed to set a higher bar for disabled candidates opting for admission to under-graduate medical courses. It has recommended that the minimum degree of disability should be set at 40% in order to avail reservation by persons with specified disability, whereas those with visual impairment and hearing impairment of less than 40% might be eligible for the medical course but not for reservation. The health ministry has called for public opinion on this issue, while the medical fraternity and activists contend that the proposed guidelines violates the disability Act by not allowing the individuals suffering from certain categories of disability to pursue the career of their choice.
