A recent study has found an increase in the number of women attempting to end their pregnancies on their own following the Supreme Court's June 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Researchers surveyed women of reproductive age in the U.S. both before and after the ruling. The proportion of women reporting self-managed abortions rose from 2.4% to 3.3%.
In the study, approximately 7,000 women were surveyed six months before the decision, and another 7,100 were surveyed a year after. Participants were asked if they had ever attempted to end a pregnancy independently, and those who answered yes provided details about their methods and experiences. Women cited reasons such as privacy concerns, the high cost of clinic procedures, and a desire to attempt self-managed abortions first.
