The first line therapy during acute asthmatic exacerbations to reverse airway obstruction are bronchodilators which work by relaxing airway smooth muscle. The following article describes new classes of potential bronchodilators which have the potential to be used alone or in combination with existing bronchodilators to reverse acute airway obstruction in the future. By relaxing these muscles, the airways become wider, which helps to improve airflow through the lungs, making breathing easier for patients.
