NIPAH virus is BSL-4 agent i.e. one of the deadliest pathogens posing high risk of life-threatening disease, for which no treatment is available. Therefore, adequate biosafety precautions need to be adopted while handling clinical samples.
Union Health Ministry has issued an advisory for sample collection and transport guidelines for laboratory diagnosis of NIPAH virus infection. The advisory states that: Sample collection : The samples should be collected as early as possible (preferably within 4-5 days on onset of illness.
