Nearly 63% of 57 million deaths occur due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) worldwide. These numbers are high particularly in lower and middle-income countries and populations. Undernutrition, obesity and diet-related chronic diseases are often perceived as separate problems however they are closely linked. These have a direct impact on the global rise in NCDs. Undernutrition leads to increased risk of NCDs which affects over 1 billion people worldwide and is prevalent in almost 36 countries.
On the other side, obesity and diet-related chronic diseases are also emerging as a serious public health problem. Improper nutrition is the underlying problem of NCDs which needs to be urgently addressed in a sustainable way.
