Dentists in the United States prescribed opioids over eight million times in 2022 despite the well-documented risks of addiction and overdose associated with their unnecessary use. In the search for effective non-opioid alternatives, a study has examined the effectiveness of combining acetaminophen and ibuprofen compared to hydrocodone and acetaminophen in managing pain among 1,815 patients following impacted mandibular third-molar extraction surgery. The study showed that patients who received the acetaminophen and ibuprofen combination experienced significantly less pain on the first two days post-surgery and no pain over the entire postoperative period than those who received hydrocodone and acetaminophen.
