Obesity is a major public health problem, with prevalence increasing at staggering rates in many countries. It affects a wide spectrum of age groups, from the young to the elderly. The medical consequences of obesity are numerous. The impact of obesity on health is widespread, but however, less well documented are the potential ocular effects of obesity. Amongst different eye diseases, obesity has been associated with cataract,1age-related maculopathy, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.

Various population-based and prospective studies support an association between obesity and risk of age-related cataract.
