Opioids are one of the most commonly used chronic and severe pain treatments. Recently, a marked increase in opioid prescriptions has been observed. However, improper tapering of opioids is associated with significant health risks, including overdose, mental health crises, and suicide.1, 2 Nevertheless, the deprescription of opioids can be complex and challenging. Existing guidelines in certain countries focus on pain management using other analgesics and gradual cessation of opioid use.

To address the safe deprescription of opioids, a team of experts from Australia released a set of evidence-based recommendations based on recent studies. They are summarized below.
