Neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, have been linked to poor oral health and increased rates of dental diseases. Notably, antipsychotic medications may play a role in the development of oral adverse effects, though this connection remains largely underexplored to date. To investigate further, a pharmacovigilance analysis reviewed 134,361 individual case reports from the EudraVigilance database to evaluate the association between commonly prescribed antipsychotics and oral health complications. The study found that atypical antipsychotics were associated with a higher number of oral adverse effect reports (n=5663) compared to typical antipsychotics (n=787).
Typical antipsychotics showed stronger associations with orofacial dyskinesia (reporting odds ratios ROR: 2.2 vs. 1.6). Clozapine was linked to hypersalivation (n=1619; ROR: 33.1), whileβ¦
