A 77-year-old female patient presents with the complaints of bleeding gums, calculus and has bleeding on probing on two or more aspects of each tooth. A comprehensive examination revealed a diagnosis of generalized chronic periodontitis. Periodontal pockets of 5 mm and more are present. The clinical picture showed a mixed red and white lesion in the background of white striations involving the gingiva between teeth 13 and 14. Radiographic examination showed a generalized horizontal bone loss of about 40% to 50% around most teeth. Incisional biopsies were performed from the left buccal mucosa and labial gingiva of 13/14.
