Alfred H. Freiberg, in 1914 first described a condition of the painful collapse of the articular surface of the second metatarsal head.

This syndrome later named after him as Freiberg’s Disease. This disease is one of the rare orthopedic conditions. The true incidence rate of Freiberg’s disease has not been identified but the disease affects females under 18 years old than males. The disease occurs at the growth spurt at the puberty and is caused by the avascular necrosis of the metatarsal head.
