Shocking, but true. A pharmacist carried out the delivery of a baby at one of the private hospitals in New Delhi and left a needle in the patient's body in the process. Instead of a qualified doctor, a New Delhi hospital got the delivery performed by an on-duty pharmacist. Describing the act as "negligent" and "deficient in service", the Delhi State Consumer Commission fined the hospital with Rs 30 lakhs.
The incident occurred in 2009 when a woman admitted to the hospital underwent a surgery carried by the pharmacist who left the surgical needle inside the uterus which led to profuse bleeding. None of the doctors paid any attention and furthermore, the hospital authorities also manipulated the records to prove a qualified doctor had delivered the baby instead of the pharmacist.
