Researchers from Imperial College, London, and the University of Exeter, UK, have stated that anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) drugs are effective against immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. However, by suppressing the immune system, they minimize the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine leading to severe COVID-19 outcomes. According to a study published in the journal GUT, people undergoing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment had poor antibody response to COVID-19 vaccination. The study included 865 patients who were on infliximab, an anti-TNF drug, for IBD.
The antibody response was measured in the study participants after they received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination.
