Antibiotic use during the third trimester of pregnancy leads to an increased risk of childhood wheeze in an offspring, new study findings suggest. Antibiotic use in pregnancy and the risk of wheeze is a widely debated topic and a new study has evaluated whether confounding factors could explain this suggested association. The existing body of knowledge suggests an inconsistent association of antibiotics use with wheeze or asthma. The study recently published online in the European Respiratory Journal suggests that prenatal antibiotics use may increase the risk of wheeze or asthma development during the childhood.
