The Maharashtra government has decided to woo private doctors, by first allowing them to negotiate salaries and later providing additional incentives of up to ₹3 lakh for rural posting. Since the scheme was announced, 356 specialists have been appointed. Until last year in October, 64% vacancy in 648 posts for anesthetists was noted, 35% in 561 pediatrician and 26% in 612 gynecologists’ posts. The Maharashtra government thus decided to allow private doctors negotiate their salary in the tribal areas.
Whereas in other regions, they offered a fixed salary with incentives like ₹4,000 for each Caesarean surgery, ₹40 for each ante-natal check-up, ₹1,500 per assisted delivery and ₹1,200 per pediatric case treated.
