A recent clinical study reported that vaginal progesterone reduces the risk of preterm birth and improves perinatal outcomes in singleton gestations with a mid-trimester sonographic short cervix. This study, published in American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, also stated that there were no reported toxic effects on childhood neurodevelopment. Worldwide, preterm birth complications are the leading cause of child mortality and it was responsible for nearly 1 million deaths in 2013.
