Indian healthcare is a complex system with services being provided both by the public and privatized sectors. A recent report published by the World Health Organization has noted that 77.4% of qualified medical professionals are based in the urban areas. The majority of the remaining doctors, who serve in rural areas, are from the public sector. Thus, a large urban-rural disparity exists in the availability of qualified doctors in India. The problem is further aggravated by the large-scale migration of medical students to developed countries adding to the growing brain drain.
