Hospital-acquired infections usually occur while on treatment in the hospital. These are absent at the time of admission and are caused due to pathogens that cause infections in the bloodstream and the urinary tract, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and surgery-associated infections.

According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 1.7 million patients acquire infections during hospitalization, and more than 98,000 patients die due to such infections annually. Utmost care and management are needed to overcome the challenges posed by hospital-acquired infections.
