The presence of fever may indicate an active infection of a pathogenic organism that is replicating itself faster than the body’s immune system that is able to destroy it. Fever is a symptom of an infection. Performing surgery on a patient with an infection increases the risk of complications. This is especially important in operations that require a highly sterile environment, such as orthopedic operations that use implants. Of course, emergency surgery can be accomplished if the patient is running a fever.
As in all medical interventions, calculation of risks is imperative. If the risk of not having surgery is higher than the risk of operating under fever then the surgery can be planned accordingly. What is your opinion about not performing surgery on a patient with fever? What can be the probable reasons for the same?
