Researchers of UAE’s Antimicrobial Surveillance Program reported that the increased use of antibiotic across the UAE might be the probable reason for increased resistance to antibiotics. Physicians have also been advised to avoid prescribing antibiotics for common flu to curb the rise in antibiotic resistance. A growing trend of increased antibiotic use across the UAE may lead to devastating consequences for the country as resistance to antibiotics are rising.
Pharmacies across the country have been directed by the Health Ministry to sell antibiotics to only those customers who have a valid prescription. A report on the scale the problem indicates that the current annual death rates caused by antimicrobial-resistant infections can be as high as 700,000, and may even rise to 10 million by 2050.
