Venous thromboembolism (VTE) (when deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism taken together)  is a common vascular disease and a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The study reported in this article compared the effectiveness and safety of rivaroxaban versus warfarin. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism are collectively known as venous thromboembolism (VTE). Overall VTE has recurrence rate as high as 10% per year, and are higher for unprovoked VTE than for proved VTE.

Although anticoagulant therapy ensures the lower recurrence of VTE, it must be balanced against the increased risk of bleeding.
