Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is a leading cause of blindness treated primarily with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections. Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) targets key disease processes and was evaluated in the STAR trial to potentially reduce the need for anti-VEGF injections without compromising vision. The pivotal, double-masked, randomized trial enrolled participants with chronic active nAMD who had received multiple prior anti-VEGF injections. The participants were randomly assigned in a 2:1 ratio to receive either 16-Gy SRT using a robotically controlled device or sham treatment.
The primary outcome of the study showed a significant reduction in the number of ranibizumab injections over two years in the SRT group compared to sham. Visual acuity changes were comparable between groups, demonstrating non-inferiority of SRT. Safetyโฆ
