Sepsis is a common and severe complication in critically ill patients. An early diagnosis and treatment can improve the survival rates in septic patients; therefore, accurate diagnosis is of prime importance. Recently, biomarkers are emerging as a tool that can help distinguish an infection warranting antibiotics from an inflammatory response that does not require antibiotic administration.
Hence, sepsis biomarkers could be helpful to decrease the use of antibiotics or unnecessary diagnostic tests, such as CT scans, to identify the source of sepsis. Source: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
