Serotonin syndrome (SS) is a life-threatening condition characterized by the increased concentrations of serotonin in the nervous system. This is mainly attributed to the use of serotonergic drugs (commonly used to treat depression) alone or drug interactions between serotonergic drugs and other medications. Clinical presentation Characteristic triad— Altered mental status, autonomic hyperactivity, and neuromuscular dysfunction These are accompanied by other symptoms, including diaphoresis, tachycardia, and mild fever.
Mild cases can progressively worsen and cause cardiovascular collapse and even death.
