Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) and postpartum depression symptoms (PPDS) are among the most common maternal complications, yet their relationship remains unclear. To explore this, researchers in China studied 3,061 pregnant women to examine whether first-trimester NVP is linked to PPDS. Overall, 64.0% experienced NVP in early pregnancy, with 42.0% mild cases, 20.2% moderate cases, and 1.8% severe cases.
PPDS was identified in 16.0% of participants, with prevalence rates of 16.8% at 1 month and 13.6% at 6 months postpartum. Importantly, women with severe NVP had a significantly higher risk of PPDS, showing a 2.39-fold increase at 1 month and a 2.66-fold increase at 6 months postpartum compared with those without NVP.
