According to the recent trial published by The BMJ, researchers claimed that vertebroplasty is not an effective pain relief treatment when compared with placebo in adult patients with osteoporosis. It is well known that osteoporosis is a disorder characterized by weakening of bone and mostly results in pathological fractures. Similarly, the major fractures caused by osteoporosis are vertebral compression fractures which usually occur in the spine and lead to deformity, breathing problems and loss of height.

Furthermore, vertebroplasty includes injection of special cement into the fractured bone to stabilize it and to relieve pain. The trial which aimed to resolve the uncertainty about benefits, risks and cost-effectiveness involved 180 adults >50 years old, characterized with 1-3 painful vertebral compression fractures of nine weeks old.
